'Mother' Memorable Novel by Maxim Gorky. Relevancy and Impact in today's World.
MOTHER
The most famous, influencing anti Elite class novel “Mother” which helped crumbled the mighty empires of Europe, was one of the most awe-inspiring Novels of world written by Maxim Gorky in 1906 about the deteriorating plight of revolutionary factory workers in Russia. In my opinion the author portrayed the worst socio-economic plight of oppressed people not only in Russia but also the entire world subjugated by Imperialist Powers. This Novel was written before the World War 1. The prevailing system could not resolve the problems of people as a whole rather increasing poverty in the country. Like today wealthy people were becoming wealthier at the cost of poor people. In Russia people were seeking a new pro people system to resolve their socio-economic conditions. Maxim Gorky in his memorable Novel book depicts miserable pathetic conditions of the poverty ridden peasantry of Russia during the imperialist days of Tzarism. Novel is based on real life events, revolving around Anna Zalomova and her son Pyotr Zalomov. Maxim Gorky was a distant relative of Anna Zalomova. Novel is real depiction of socio-economic conditions of Russian People groaning under the burden of brutal rule of Tzar. Maxim Gorky was deeply influenced by the events in Russia following the defeat of Russia's first revolution in 1905. Maxim Gorky through his writing tried to imbibe the spirit of the proletarian movement and encouraged the people to stand to snatch their rights. His writing stirred not only the deprived and oppressed People in the entire Europe but also in the entire world. His writing gave a new spirit to the nationalist around the world. Consequently, the nationalist movements waged valiant struggle against all Imperialist in the world and triumphed. The sacrifice rendered by the Son and his Mother proved a wave of breeze for the people of World. The European, Chinese, African, South American, Asian especially South Asian people took the banner of Salvation and within four decades demolished and crumbled mighty Empires of world.
EVENTS.
In his noble novel ‘Mother’, Gorky describe the life of a Mother woman who works in a Russian factory struggling to combat sufferings and miseries of life like other peoples. Her husband tortured her physically and emotionally. Her husband did not look after family because of immoral character. Mother has a son, namely, Pavel Vlasov. Pavel begins to follow his fathers’ footstep. Mother was worried about his son’s future but her admonitions proved in vain. But the Nature willed against and said enough is enough. By the supreme will of God her son was diverted to other activities which showed the world a new ray of hope and transformed the future world by sacrificing their lives. His companion and friends changed his life unintentionally and suddenly involved in revolutionary activities. He forsakes his old habits. Pavel starts to bring books and comrades and friends to his home and discussed the ways and means to change the rotten system prevailing in the country. Pavel and his comrades and friends spread the idea of Socialist teaching by writing on the walls during the darkness of night. The son during the darkness of night was writing on the walls of cities against the brutal rule, appealing the downtrodden people to raise their voice against their usurped socio-economic rights. Mother, Nilovna became apprehensive of his son’s revolutionary activities. She feared and expecting the repercussions but did not hindered his beloved son rather encouraged him. When her son, Pavel was arrested and sentenced for leading a Mayday parade. After the arrest of Piotr Zalomov along with his companions by Tsarist police, his mother, Anna Zalomova followed and continued his sons’ revolutionary activity by writing on the walls and preaching to the people. Nevertheless, Mother moved by her maternal feelings and, though uneducated, and politically ignorant involved in revolutionary activities, and eventually became real protagonist following death of his beloved son. The mother assumes the duty of distributing revolutionary literature and by writing on the walls during the darkness of night. Caught with the literature she was choked and beaten to death. But the spirit of revolution survives and brings victory for workers. Mothers sacrifice spread unstoppable waves of freedom throughout the world. As usual the agitators were portrayed by authorities as anarchist peasant. The event took place during a May Day demonstration in Sormovo in 1902, a shipbuilding town in Russia. The Bolsheviks praised the Novel as a paean to socialist ideals, but its message encompasses more than mere class struggle. Novel is replete with Biblical and spiritual allusions and revolutionaries were portrayed as saints of time, ready for martyrdom like all nationalist of world fighting against brutal inhuman prevailing system all over the world even today. They gave wisdom and spirit to eradicate oppressive rule. They spread the truth to save and liberate oppressed people. They were revealing the truth that the ruling class including the Priest, landlords, administrators, and industrialist are exploiting in the name of religion. They tried to reduce the burden of suffering of common people. After lapse of a century of revolutions the world has changed to great extent. The Novel’s central theme is the Mother's awakening from a life of fear and ignorance.
